European Pesticide Regulation Set for a Change

New Pesticide Legislation

The way in which pesticides are approved for sale the the UK, (and the rest of the EU) is about to change. The old EU Directive 91/414/EEC will be completely replaced after a transitional period by the new rules.

The main difference in approach to pesticide regulation is that the current “approvals based on risk” system will be replaced by one based on hazard. In practice what this will mean is that no compounds will be considered for approval if they are:

·       category 1 or 2 mutagens

·       category 1 or 2 carcinogens, unless exposure is negligible

·       category 1 or 2 reproductive toxins, unless exposure is negligible

·       endocrine disrupters which may cause adverse effects in humans, unless exposure is negligible.

·       persistent organic pollutants

·       persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic substances

·       very persistent and very bioaccumulative substances

·       endocrine disrupters which may cause adverse effects on non-target organisms, unless exposure is negligible
